Endodontics (Root Canal)
In general terms, endodontics is the dental specialty in charge of treating the tooth’s canals. Inside these is the nerve, which provides sensitivity and vitality. This treatment consists of removing the nerve or dental pulp when it is injured or infected; it is performed by cleaning the tooth canals and filling them with a biocompatible material.
WHY CAN THE DENTAL PULP BECOME INFLAMED OR INFECTED?
The primary cause is tooth decay (cavities); a part of the tooth structure is lost, leaving the pulp unprotected, which typically causes high sensitivity to thermal stimuli and ultimately sharp pain.
Another cause is large restorations, which can cause aggression to the dental pulp. The pulp defends itself by retracting and occasionally becomes necrotic, causing infections and abscesses. It can also occur due to trauma or blows that cause pulp necrosis.
